Over 40 families have been left homeless in the last two days in Nambale, Busia County, following destruction of their houses by a strong wind that accompanied heavy rains being experienced in the county.
The families from Syekunya, Manyole, Busidimbu and Lwanyange villages in Nambale sub-county also lost property of unknown value in the process.
Leah Achuma, one of the affected residents, expressed concern that the weekend disaster had made life unbearable for the affected families as they are currently being hosted by neighbours who may not manage the extra burden for long. They also fear possibilities of disease outbreak if fast interventions are not put in place.
“We have been reduced zero by this disaster that occurred here. My houses and all properties have been destroyed,” said Achuma, a resident of Nambale.
Nambale Township MCA Kenneth Rupia urged both county and national government disaster committees to move with speed and intervene in the situation.
“Most of these families have children who are going to sit the national examinations this month. I appeal to the Government to act swiftly so that normalcy can be restored,” Ken Rupia Nambale township MCA.
“The families have lost their household items. Their grains were also destroyed, leaving them with nothing to feed on,” he added.
County commissioner Kipchumba Ruto, who is also the chair to the County Disaster Management Committee, said that in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Committee, they were looking for a solution to the situation.
The families remained hopeful that disaster committees and humanitarian organizations would visit the area and offer a solution.
