Boda boda riders have been urged to strictly adhere to the traffic rules so as to reduce road carnage involving motorbikes.

Boda Boda Association of Kenya, National Executive chairman Kevin Mubadi, called on the riders to operate within the law by observing the Highway Code and operating with up to date insurance and licenses.

Addressing boda boda operators in Kajiado town, Mubadi further urged them to wear helmets and reflective jackets so as to ensure visibility to other road users.

He said most of the accidents were as a result of human error and the riders' failure to observe traffic rules.

“I want to urge all boda boda riders to adhere strictly to the traffic rules so as to reduce road fatalities. Ensure that you are licensed and your motorcycle is insured before you operate on the road,” said the Chairman.

This comes amidst the rising number of boda boda accidents, with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reporting 1,202 accidents in 2022. This is an increase compared to 1,154 accidents recorded in 2021.

The Chairman implored upon the riders to be quick to point out the few criminal elements using motorcycles to commit crime as they were soiling their reputation.

Alex Gitari, Kajiado Boda Boda Association of Kenya Chairman, echoed Mubadi’s sentiments adding that all riders must ensure that they are registered with their office.

Gitari further called on them to be disciplined in their work and be compliant by paying county revenue.

“We have over 25,000 boda boda operators in Kajiado County. I want to urge all of them to ensure that they are registered with us, all riders must belong to an association to ensure their well-being,” said Gitari.

During the meeting, the riders were also trained on the use of electric motorcycles which are environmentally friendly and less complicated mechanically.

James Karari, Sales and Marketing Manager at Watu Credit, said the company was providing affordable and flexible financing for riders who want to purchase the electric motorbikes.
