A young man was on Monday arraigned before the Kenol law courts and fined Sh.70,000 for being in possession of 30 rolls of bhang valued at Sh.600
Michael Mwaura, the court heard, was on May 16 arrested in Makuyu area, Murang’a South.
The arrest was made based on information received from a complainant who alleged that his chicken had been stolen and identified the accused as the suspect.
The arresting officers went to Mwaura's house at 5:00 am to conduct a search whereby they discovered 30 rolls of bhang wrapped in black polythene paper hidden under the cushions of his seat.
They also found Sh. 200, believed to be the proceeds from the sale of bhang.
In his defense, Mwaura claimed that the person who reported the lost chicken was his own mother, and that she had conspired with his brother to frame him as a means of punishment from a brewing family feud.
The accused further told the court the punishment stemmed from an incident several months ago when his wife stole money from his brother and left home but he brought his wife back to the displeasure of his mother and brother
As such, he told the court, the bhang found in his possession was planted in his house by his brother who further called the police on him to incriminate him so as to settle scores.
Mwaura further told senior resident magistrate Sheila Nyaga that the rolls of bhang were found on his table, contrary to the initial report claiming that they were found under the cushions.
However, the court found Mwaura guilty of the offense and ordered him to pay a fine of Sh. 70,000 or in default serve a one-year jail term.
