FKF convenes meeting to discuss elections

By Peter Ochieng

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership has convened a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, to discuss several issues partaining to football management in the country.

The meeting, according to a statement signed by FKF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Barry Otieno will be held on Saturday, 6th January, 2024 at the federation's Goal project offices in Nairobi.

Otieno said issues expected to be discussed during the meeting include FKF activities for 2024, an update from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), the forthcoming federation elections, and the financial status of the federation.

“Dear executives, following consultations with the FKF President, you are hereby invited to a National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Saturday, January 6, 2024,” the statement reads in part.

“The agenda of the meeting will be as follows; FKF activities, FIFA update, FKF election matters, FKF financial status. Kindly, accept dear Sirs, Madams, our utmost gratitude for your continued support.”

The meeting is expected to give a clear indication of when the next much awaited FKF elections will be held.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa and his team are expected to leave office after serving for two terms of four years each.

However, there's is a possibility of the elections being held in 2025, to compensate for the time Mwendwa and his team lost when former Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Sports Amina Mohamed expelled the duly elected FKF team, and formed a caretaker committee in 2022 to run football activities in the country for about a year.

Normalcy only returned after Ababu Namwamba was appointed Sports CS under the Kenya Kwanza administration, slightly over a year ago.

On the other hand, the polls are also likely to be held in February, this year. Several football stakeholders have already declared their bids to succeed Nick Mwendwa.

They include Hussein Mohammed, associated with the Super 8 football tournament, US-based Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, a former Kenya international, who also featured for Gor Mahia during his playing days, Gor Mahia Secretary General Samuel Ochola and former FKF President Sam Nyamweya.
