Vihiga governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo wants motorists to adhere to the highway code in order to avoid accidents on the roads.

Dr. Ottichilo said most of the road accidents in the country are attributable to reckless driving and blatant violation of traffic regulations by road users.

He has urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in collaboration with the traffic police to strictly enforce the rules and regulations to prevent road carnage that is being witnessed.

The county head was speaking at Friends Girls high school Mbihi in Vihiga  sub county, during a requiem mass for six girls from the school who perished in an accident a fortnight ago along the Naivasha-Nairobi highway.

“The NTSA and the traffic police should carry out inspections to ensure that only vehicles that meet the set out conditions are allowed on the roads,” he asserted.

He proposed that an integrated transport information management system be put in place in order to easily detect and arrest the traffic offenders so that they are prosecuted.

The governor’s lamentation comes against the backdrop of increasing accidents that have led to the loss of hundreds of lives since the beginning of the year.
