Igembe South Member of Parliament John Paul Mwirigi has stated that the car gift he received from President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 was actually Deputy President William Ruto's idea. Addressing the media on Sunday, April 10, 2022, Mwirigi refuted claims that he is disrespecting President Kenyatta by supporting DP Ruto's presidential ambitions. This was after the young lawmaker was involved in a public altercation with Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya. The Igembe South legislator explained that it was DP Ruto's idea to buy him a car, and President Kenyatta implemented it by buying him the car, therefore, it was a combined effort from both. "President Kenyatta bought the car after DP Ruto told him the best gift the presidency could give me was to make my work easier by way of mobility," Mwirigi stated. "Even the president himself has never come to tell me that the car that he had given me was meant to solicit him to support everything he said," he said. Castigating Mwirigi's move, CS Munya had claimed that President Kenyatta held the young lawmaker by the hand and guided him through politics, and therefore, deserves more respect. "John Paul Mwirigi is an example of President Uhuru Kenyatta's good work in this region. He was invited to the State House and the President personally bought him his first car. He should know that you do not disrespect someone who has adopted you as a son," the CS claimed. Mwirigi explained that he had decided to support Deputy President Ruto because he had equally helped his electorate and had been there for him when he required guidance. "I have decided to stick with Deputy President William Ruto because he came through for me when I needed help, I will be supporting his presidential bid and will seek re-election on a UDA ticket," the lawmaker explained. Mwirigi's remarks did not sit well with Munya who interrupted the lawmaker's address which quickly escalated into a verbal spat between the two leaders. Mwirigi was forced to leave the meeting in a huff. "You are a CS and it is us as MPs who have employed you..." Mwirigi said. "There is no job you have given me, alaah. Do I look like John Paul Mwirigi's employee? I gave him a chance to greet people at my meeting but you have no respect," Munya responded.
