Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara has secured a major victory after United Democratic Alliance (UDA) dispute tribunal reversed a decision to award her opponent with the party’s nomination certificate. The tribunal found that Kihara secured 9,904 votes in the nominations against her opponent John Kihangi who secured 9,903 votes. The new results indicate that Kihara won by one vote. Earlier, Kihangi had been declared the winner and awarded the certificate. According to the earlier results, Kihangi had secured 10,394 against Kihara’s 9,991 votes. While reversing Kihangi’s victory, the tribunal noted that the final tally announced by the Returning officer did not include results from Maua primary school and Milimani secondary school polling stations. “In the end, the committee finds that based on the figures above which were also affirmed by the second respondent, Jayne Wanjiru Kihara obtained the highest number of votes. As such she ought to have been declared the validly nominated candidate. Earlier , Kihara had protested how the nomination exercise was handled, arguing that some ballot boxes had been tampered with as they were unsealed. Her opponent, however, maintained that the exercise was credible, free and fair. He called upon Kihara to concede defeat and work with him for the benefit of Naivasha residents. “UDA has shown the country that despite meagre resources, we can organize free and credible elections ahead of the main event in August,” he said. By press time, Kihangi had not announced his next move, but is is highly likely that he could challenge the tribunal’s ruling.
