A middle-aged man committed suicide by jumping into Sossian River in Lumakanda location of Lugari Sub County on Saturday after three failed attempts.
Govedi Kedogo, 49, of Sossian village in Mwamba Sub Location allegedly took his life over persistent toothaches.
Kedogo’s sister Rhoda Khavochi told the media that the deceased had on numerous occasions complained of severe toothaches but lacked money to visit a dentist.
Khavochi disclosed that due to frustration her brother had attempted to end his life thrice before successfully doing so on the fourth attempt.
She said in the three attempts neighbours locked him in the house for three days as they monitored him but unfortunately he got a chance to escape and ran towards the Sossian River which borders their farm and jumped into it.
Kedogo’s neighbours regretted the incident saying it was unfortunate that the deceased chose to end his life in a cruel manner just because of a toothache.
“We tried to rescue him three times. We are however disappointed that he decided to take his life in such a manner,” Kelly Mulinya.
Sossian village elder Abraham Shamala said apart from complaining of toothaches the deceased looked mentally disturbed and he might have died out of depression.
He said: “He was the sole breadwinner who was taking care of his elderly and ailing mother although he looked depressed before taking his life.”
Shamala said combined efforts by residents and local divers managed to retrieve the body from the river before reporting to Turbo police station.
Lugari Police Commander Bernard Ngungu confirmed the incident saying the body of the deceased was taken to Kimbilio Funeral Home in the neighbouring Uasin Gishu County as his officers launch investigations.
