Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that the government will reconsider the curfew inflicted on parts of Lamu early this year.
Matiangi made the statement during a tour of duty in Mombasa on Wednesday where he said that, the government will review the action taken to see if the curfew will be lifted.
“The challenges of terrorism are with us and from time to time, we have to be conscious of what we do and who is near us especially in this season of politics,” he said.

He said the government is well prepared in terms of security especially in response to the challenges posed by the election season where he urged citizens to be on the lookout for potential villains hiding in political campaigns to perpetuate illegal acts.
The National Security Council announced the four divisions within Lamu central and Lamu west sub-counties as ‘disturbed areas’ where he directed the deployment of special security units to the area following attacks that claimed the lives of seven people and evictions of several families.
Matiang’i assured that the government has beefed up security along the Kenyan coastline and in other water bodies in the country as part of the preparations for the general elections.
He further said that more equipment has also been procured and additional personnel backed to the Coast Guard to prevent terrorist-linked attacks and other seaborne crimes including drugs and arms trafficking.
The CS was speaking at the Kenya Coast Guard Services headquarters in Liwatoni, where he insisted that security officers have been mobilized across the region and the country ahead of August 9, polls.
He however asked leaders in the region to exercise caution as they continue with their campaigns in the region which he says has experienced occurrences of ethnic-based tensions in past elections.
Lamu, is one of the places which has experienced attacks from Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab resulting to residents losing lives and distraction of learning and economic activities.
