Morara Kebaso arrested

By Peter Ochieng

Morara Kebaso has been arrested.

The lawyer turned activist was arrested by police officers, after a raid at his main office in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi on Monday.

He came into fame at the height of anti-government protests in June, with a new brand of activism, which entailed moving around the country exposing stalled or unfinished government projects, even after billions of funds were allocated for completion.

After his arrest, he was reportedly taken to the Nairobi Regional Police Headquarters in Nairobi, with his team, including lawyers allegedly being blocked from accessing him.

"They have restricted access and have strict instructions from the top not to allow any person to access Morara including lawyers, media personnel, and any other persons," one of his lawyers told the press.

“The question is what type of police do we have here? They have no respect for the constitution, they have no respect for the rule of the law. The head is rotten all the way from the Minister of Interior including all the officers that we have here holding Morara and we should condemn it in the strongest way possible."

It is still not clear why he was arrested. However, observers link his arrest to a video posted on his social media pages, where he denounced the brutal abduction and torture of Mombasa-based blogger, Bruce John.

Bruce was picked up by people who claimed that he was being taken to Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir to allegedly apologise to him, over a matter the blogger had posted on social media.

Instead, he was tortured and sodomised and was never taken to the governor as he had previously been told. Kebaso said the governor should be investigated.

"The governor should be investigated and arrested. If it is not done then I am ready to suspend all activities for nationwide demonstrations," said the activist.

However, the first term county boss denied having a hand in Bruce’s tribulations.

“And throughout my life, neither myself or any of my family members have ever crossed the line of visiting any form of violence on anyone,” he said during a press briefing on Monday.

Kenyans online continue to demand for the release of Kebaso.
