Recruitment of new teachers in Kiambu for the junior secondary school lot has been concluded in respect of the President’s directive for registration of 30,000 teachers countrywide by mid-year with the prospective teachers expected to start working on 1st September.
Speaking to KNA, Kiambu TSC County Director Abubakar Hassan said Kiambu county was allocated 575 slots to fill with 42 earmarked for primary schools and 533 targeted to junior secondary schools.
“We are very happy, the teachers made applications to their respective sub counties with an almost even number divided with the primary school allocation and as for the Junior secondary schools we will look at each school and assess which are in need of more staff and deploy accordingly,” Hassan said.
The TSC Director praised the recruitment process as a success particularly in the integration of ICT in the process, which made everything streamlined from uploading documents to candidate selection making communication efficient.
“We are grateful not to have had any issues or concerns from any of the applicants during the recruitment process. It has really been quite smooth, we have totally embraced ICT as part of our processes and it has turned out for the better.”
He further said progress has been registered not only in the technological sector of recruitment but also through equal opportunity, specifically pointing out persons with disabilities
“TSC strives to enforce equality in its selection of teachers, here in Kiambu our directive is to allocate 5 percent of the total number of teachers listed to persons with disabilities, sometimes the number might not reach that amount but we do make sure that there is adequate representation,” Hassan said.
June Mukami, a local chemist, said that she is glad that there has been progress in the addition of teachers in the county and added that some of the sub counties have struggled with the shortage.
“It's fantastic news, as a mother of two both of whom are in Junior secondary, I’m happy to hear the process is nearing its completion. Sometimes you might have situations where teachers might be overworked to compensate for the lack of staff making it hard especially in more rural areas,” she said
The teachers are recruited as interns on a contractual basis and posted to the schools and are expected to earn a basic salary of Sh20, 000, with the possibility of negotiations to occur by the time a year has elapsed to assess the possibilities of contract renewal.
