Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has opened up on his recent move to join Wiper Democratic Movement party headed by Kalonzo Musyoka, noting that before the move, he had expressed interest in joining Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA. According to Sonko, his attempt to join UDA was allegedly sabotaged by the party’s Secretary General Veronica Maina. “I was to register with UDA first but I was mistreated. I wanted to join them after resigning from Jubilee but SG Ms Veronica Maina sabotaged my registration,”he told Nation. Sonko further claimed that the party lacks an efficient way of managing its affairs, adding that the same could cost them dearly as we head towards the 2022 general election. “They are treating politicians badly and if the behavior continues then they are going to lose many political leaders,” he opined. Explaining his decision to join Wiper, Sonko noted that he is keen on contesting for a seat in the 2022 general election, adding that he had to comply with electoral timelines in regards to political party membership. There were constitutional timelines for every politician to be in a party before the expiry period which was Saturday midnight,” Sonko opined. Sonko currently has a pending case at the Supreme Court seeking to overturn his impeachment by the Senate. The case got to the Supreme Court after the High Court and the Court of Appeal agreed with the Senate’s decision to kick out Sonko. Sonko is optimistic that the Supreme Court will deliver a favourable ruling and clear him to contest in August 2022. He, is, however, yet to announce the seat he’ll contest if he is cleared, only declaring that it will be in Nairobi.
