Gachagua wanted Mt Kenya MPs to ditch UDA – MP Wamumbi

Deputy President (DP) Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua allegedly asked Mt Kenya Members of Parliament (MPs) to ditch the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, the second in command urged the MPs to abandon their support for the Head of State and regroup, as the clock continues to tick towards the 2027 polls.

The first term legislature who recently publicly confirmed his fallout with Gachagua, recounted having a long meeting with the deputy president on June 25, 2024, at the height of anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

The lawmaker claims that it is during that meeting that Gachagua broadly shared the need for him and other Mt Kenya legislatures, to abandon their support for the President and his UDA party.

"I was the only person he met that day; we talked for hours, and I tried to tell him that his advisers were misleading him, just as they had misled another president," Wamumbi told Inooro TV.

"I told him that he had told the Gikuyu people that he never slept and was always watching out for them, but he was now leading them down the wrong path. I begged him that we stay in government since we already have enough seats; we should work using what we have."

He acknowledged that the DP has offered valuable support in his life, adding that it does not mean he doesn’t have his own opinions on various issues affecting the country.

Over the weekend, Gachagua accused the ministry of interiors and national administration over what he termed as sabotaging his fight against illicit brew in Central Kenya.

He specifically fingered the MP for reportedly spearheading the reopening of bars shut down in Karatina.

The MP responded by stating that his fallout with the second in command, has nothing to do with the fight against alcohol and drug abuse.
