Infotrak: Raila most preferred presidential candidate in Mombasa

By Joshua Cheloti A latest opinion poll released by Infrotrak shows that ODM leader Raila Odinga remains the most preferred presidential candidate amongst voters in Mombasa county for the August 9 poll. According to the study commissioned by Haki Africa, Raila who is the Azimio la Umoja candidate enjoys a 52 per cent support base. His key competitor for the poll Deputy President William Ruto is the preferred candidate for 29 per cent of the coastal county locals. In the Mombasa gubernatorial race, the survey shows that Mvita MP Nassir Abdullswamad Sheriff is the leading aspirant with the support of 48 per cent. Businessman Suleiman Shabaal, who is also eyeing the ODM ticket polled 18 per cent. Former Senator Hassan Omar, who is vying on a UDA party ticket, had 5 per cent. Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo had 4 per cent. 21 per cent of those who took part in the survey are still undecided. The survey also showed that the Azimio La Umoja coalition led by ODM leader Raila Odinga is the most preferred coalition in Mombasa county. Kenya Kwanza Alliance led by deputy president William Ruto came in second with 23 per cent while One Kenya Alliance that has since signed a deal with Azimio has the support of 3 per cent of the respondents. The survey was conducted between 9th and 12th March 2022, with 2,400 respondents involved. Coast remains a key region for the former Prime Minister in his quest for the presidency. In the last two elections, Raila has enjoyed an almost total control of the region, but there has been efforts from DP Ruto to make in roads, in hope to get a fair share of the votes. The DP has already managed to get the support of several key politicians in the region among them Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and legislator Aisha Jumwa who is eyeing the Kilifi gubernatorial seat. Raila's allies in the coast include Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
