Serial fraudster masquerading as senior gov't procurement officer arrested inside water tank
A serial fraudster who has been masquerading as a senior procurement officer at several government ministries has been arrested. According to the DCI, the man identified as David Kahi Ambuku obtained tens of millions of shillings from unsuspecting Kenyans and foreigners by presenting fraudulent tender documents and local purchase orders. He was reportedly retrieved from a water tank, where he nosedived after being ambushed by the detectives. “Ambuku, who conspired to defraud two merchants Sh47.3 million using forged tender documents for ministries of Interior and Labour, almost drowned after plunging into the water tank at the sight of financial investigations detectives, who raided his house at Kimathi estate, along Jogoo road,” the DCI narrated. Explaining how the suspect operates his scam scheme, the DCI noted that Ambuku in collaboration with rogue government officers gets access to well furnished offices and boardrooms where he hosts persons he intends to con. [Photo: Courtesy][/caption]“Innocent merchants, who mostly comprise of young ladies and foreigners looking for investment opportunities are then convinced that they have met the boss and part with colossal sums of money to influence the award of the contracts in their favour. They are then issued fake local purchase orders to supply the goods, before Ambuku stages his disappearance,” the DCI added. Prior to his arrest, Ambuku had reportedly defrauded several unsuspecting persons including a Chinese citizen who lost Ksh26 million and another unsuspecting investor who also lost Ksh26 million. The suspect is  expected to be arraigned at the Milimani Law courts on Wednesday for plea taking. The DCI has invited persons who have fallen victim to Ambuku’s scam to report to the Economic Crimes unit at DCI headquarters or contact the agency via its toll free line.
