Wiper Party under the leadership of Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday unveiled Ben Mulwa as its candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, a few days after former governor Mike Sonko joined the party.
Following Sonko’s decision to join the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the party hopping deadline, many were expecting that he will user Wiper to make his political comeback.
The speculations were further fueled by Francis Wambua, his aide, who said Sonko is seeking to reclaim the gubernatorial seat in the 2022 general election.
“Sonko is returning and will be going for the top seat. He is coming home to where he was voted by more than 800,000 residents in the last elections, which was the second-highest after the presidential vote tally,” said Wambua, as quoted by The Star
However, that has not been the case as Wiper has announced Mulwa as its candidate of choice. While making the announcement, Kalonzo said Mulwa is the best candidate to take Nairobi forward.
“Our capital city; our commercial capital; our legislative city requires redemption, reclaiming & restoration to restore our green city under the sun.
@TheWiperParty believes
@BenMulwa will do so. He is our Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate,” Kalonzo posted.

“My sincere gratitude goes out to my Party Leader, His Excellency Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, and entire Wiper Democratic Movement fraternity, and all those who have continued to be a part of this great journey.
“My commitment to redeem, reclaim and restore the long lost glory of our city remains firm. It is time now to hit the ground running, and hard,” Mulwa said.
Wiper’s decision to nominate Mulwa further complicates Azimio la Umoja’s political calculations in Nairobi as several other candidates have expressed interest in the seat using affiliate parties under the coalition.
Some of the other interested candidates include; Tim Wanyonyi (ODM), Agnes Kagure (Jubilee) and Richard Ngatia (Jubilee) among others.
