Police from Busia and Siaya Counties have launched a manhunt for robbers who killed a police officer escorting National Examinations in Siaya County on Monday.

Speaking to the press at Rwambwa area in Bunyala Sub County on Tuesday, Busia County Police Commander Joe Lekuta said that the security team received some lead that the armed robbers were seen in Bunyala area on Monday evening.

“We received information last evening that the criminal suspects were seen in this area, and we arrived here this morning at around 5.00 am, we have combed the entire hill but without any success,’ he said adding that they still have some links that the suspects will soon be found.

Lekuta stated that investigations kicked off Monday within the two counties and expressed confidence that the culprits will soon be unveiled.

He urged the local residents to remain calm adding that patrols have been enhanced in the area alongside other police offices at Rwambwa police post.

‘I want to assure the local residents that their security is well taken care of and urge them to volunteer relevant information that will assist security officers in arresting the suspects,’ he said.

Siaya County AP Commander Mzungu Shabaan urged the local residents to report suspicious characters within their midst adding that the suspects pose great danger to the locals since they are armed.

Shabaan explained that the suspects attacked police officers who were escorting KCSE examination materials to Mahero Secondary School on Monday morning killing one police officer and leaving another one with critical injuries.

‘We were later informed that the suspects had escaped through Rwambwa hills and that is why we have joined our Busia Counterparts in a search operation,’ he said.

Simon Nyende, a local resident said that he saw some suspicious characters in the area last evening hiding in one of the houses.

Nyende added that upon interrogation by the local residents, the suspects scared them by shooting into the air before escaping into the nearby Rwambwa hills.

The three suspects are reported to have killed one police officer and injured another one while escorting KCSE examination materials before escaping with their firearms.
