Champions League: What Manchester Uniteds need to progress
By Peter Ochieng
Group stage matches of the 2023/2024 season Champions League action conclude this week, with English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United on the brink of being dumped out.
United, under the tutelage of Dutchman Eric ten Hag are bottom of group A with a paltry 4 points, going into the last group matches on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
With 13 points from 5 matches, Bayern Munich are already through to the round of 16. FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray are 2nd and 3rd respectively with 5 points apiece.
The Red Devils surely need a miracle to reach the last 16. The Old Trafford side host Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. They must win to stand a mathematical chance of coming out of Group A, alongside Thomas Tuchel’s side.
FC Copenhagen will play host to Galatasaray. Unfortunately for United, a win against Bayern will not be enough. The Copenhagen versus Galatasaray tie must end in a draw.
A win for United and a draw for Galatasaray, FC Copenhagen will see the Manchester side jump to position two on the log with 7 points, one above the two rivals from Denmark and Turkey.
A win for United coupled with a win for either Copenhagen or Galatasaray will see the Red Devils drop from Champions League to the second tier Europe League championships.
Some Manchester United fans already feel their team will be dumped out of Champions League, suggesting that the team focusses on beating bitter rivals Liverpool in a league match this coming weekend.
“Let it be a walkover and focus on Liverpool, there's literally nothing to play for here,” said Topsy Valentine Sakala.
“End last in group and concentrate on domestic FA cup EPL champions league qualification. We go again next year,” noted Shaharin Shaharuddin.
“Miracle. That's all they need. Or in other words: "NO WAY." And I'm a MAN U fan,” Marian Agh.
Okaka Blessing said, “Manchester United have now become the super eagle, before they can qualify you must bring out a calculator and work it out.”
